Quality or Quantity ?

What would you choose? Quality of course! Even I would. But take the example of the style of education in AP. It's something I was noticing from the past many years, and this was bound to come. Where's the quality at any stage of learning?

I hear weird stuff like IIT coaching starting right from Class 6 in a few schools. That's sounds heavily impractical to me! As it is, there are schools that run upto 9PM when exams are round the corner. And they want to add this to that? Don't know what students could become after going through all this. This kinda stuff produces magical results! Like 99.9% score in the board exam. But ask the student where his house is, and he'll take a whole minute to say that... And had his school forced him to stay upto 10PM, he would have scored 100% and completely forgotten the way to his house!

The next stage being the ever-famous and ever-memorable Intermediate education. If it's intermediate, it's nothing but pressure. I could see that clearly in my own case. Coming out of a "normal" school, all these timings and competitions took me by surprise. The pressure turned me upside down and I flatly refused to study. Inspite of that, I could consider myself lucky for having good teachers (only 1-2 actually). We never had any rigorous EAMCET training or anything like that. But I used to hear from friends from other colleges about their timings and the hardcore training they underwent. Though it's true that I didn't score like the others, I wasn't far away. And considering the effort put in, maybe I did 10% of what the others did. Anyway, my case is totally off, compared to what's happening today. Colleges want to run even at night. Maybe they should stop sending students back home. They'd better setup camps in the college and live there for those 2 hectic years! The competition is cut-throat. Get a rank below 1000 or jump off the building! The colleges are like that, the students are like that and parents too! Everyone wants pressure, everyone wants success at the cost of anything. Maybe even health and life. I am happy I lived a very normal life during that phase. Attended college upto 5PM (which I felt was horrible), played soccer in the evening, watched TV at night and slept peacefully. No tension, no competition, no pressure and no nights-out. With the recent competitive exams' results being released, this post had to come! I read in the papers, students doing well in Intermediate, fared badly in the competitive exams and vice-versa. Both are not normal students. Infact, the ones who did 'ok' in both should be considered normal. Giving importance to all kinds of learning is the most important thing in life. If you live an EAMCET life for a whole year, you're bound to get the top result, but you'll remain a no-hoper in everything else. Ofcourse there'll be exceptions in every case. But the silliest thing I ever came across is the over-publicity of these corporate colleges on television. All of them declaring the stunning stuff they achieved and the students being made to look like superstars. Most of them cannot even talk properly and all they can say is, "It was because of the inspiration from the college and the materials they gave". Oh! We have a new Bible here, College Material. And the craziest thing is that, one college claims the student is from there and one more claims the same! I thought in competitive exams, students fight mental wars against examiners. But no! Students war against students and colleges war against colleges. That's the beautiful trend we are going through right now, and I am thankful I finished that phase without stepping a foot into that war. One paper rightly quoted an Einstein saying that goes something like, "A person who learns without feeling it, will end up like a well-trained dog"!!

And lastly comes our great Engineering ofcourse! We all know we can't live without those "All-in-One" books. And can't survive a test without copying. A day before the exam, we try to know about every cubic-inch of the Pacific Ocean, and write "Happy Days" stories on the exam paper. Maybe we were 'atleast' well-trained dogs until now (which in itself is an insult), and now we have turned into street dogs that deserve to be thrown into the City Pound...

I say, "Open Your Eyes, you wretched Mortals!!"

The Royal Recharge

After a tough schedule, I found some free time to watch a match at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium. The match was expected to be exciting because both the teams, Bangalore and Hyderabad were at the bottom of the table, nearly equal. The rush for tickets was as usual messy and somehow, we laid our hands on a handful.

It was after a long time I was visiting the stadium and the change of scene was quite astonishing. Last time I went there, the entry was free and there were no chairs anywhere on the stands. It was like a stadium in a village. This time though, all the stands, the people, the cameras, etc. made the whole thing a lot more exciting.

We were a bit late for the match due to this tickets issue, and missed the banging of Gilly and Gibbsy. They hit a few more shots and soon started falling. Within a few overs, the whole team crumbled. The score was a mere 165. We expected 190-200 judging by the way they were batting in the beginning.

The Royal Challengers came in soon and started off very slow. Due to force from friends, we shifted our place to the bottom of the stands and where some Bangalore Cheerleaders were entertaining the crowd. It was fun with all the music and dance and whistling but as the match proceeded, I could see that Deccan Chargers were on the brink of losing another match. The result seemed very obvious near the very end and they made it even more so when they smashed so many sixers into the stands where we were watching from. The last runs coming off a six was like a game finished in style and the cheerleaders went crazy by then, cheering up the crowd inspite of the loss...

As a whole, if you ignore the fact that your home team lost the game (for the 6th time!!), we had loads of fun with our voices nearly going sore due to the screaming and shouting. The audience were quite enthusiastic though the team is at the bottom, and confirmed their place there. It was worth the bucks we threw at them, especially after watching players like Vaas, Gibbs and R.P Singh coming over to the boundary and waving to the crowd... Now, after all the excitement is over, I feel sad for Gilchrist again as his team couldn't control one more game from slipping off the hands... The unstoppables (at winning) turned into The Unstoppables (at losing). Sad but true ...

Man,U are great !

The long wait is over! Manchester United finally the UEFA Champions League winners after so many years. I was waiting to see that moment but was unfortunately in Chattisgarh when Sir Alex Ferguson was busy celebrating his team's victory over Chelsea. I was so isolated back there, that I only came to know of this when I stepped into Hyderabad.

It was a shocking story to listen to! The 1-1 draw, and the extra-time, and the penalties! Every stage both the teams seemed to be neck and neck. But penalties are the sure deciders of the game. It's all down those crucial shots or saves. A tiny slip by Terry and a save from Van der Sar changed fortunes in a matter of seconds. I remember watching such a match long ago between AC Milan and Juventus where the game went down to the penalties. It gives a rush of blood that you'll be shivering on your seat. If it's the end result that matters most, then its final. Manchester United are Champions! Not just in Europe but also in England as they took home the EPL finishing ahead of Chelsea. Both teams are so close that it's things like slipping or send-offs that decide the contest. Had Drogba not been given a Red Card, things would have been different. Had Terry not slipped, things would have been different. These are really close calls and it was a few of these that sent Manchester United ahead.

The rising force behind this successful team surely is Christiano Ronaldo, who has almost single-handedly gifted the 2 trophies to his team with the number of goals he scored. A huge chunk of the credit would go to him. Sir Alex Ferguson surely would be delighted and he deserves enough credit as well. It's he who has been managing the team from so many years and brought so much success. The oldies like Giggs and Scholes didn't do too much but their mere presence would send the team spirits to a new level. Rooney and Ronaldo and Tevez did a great job handling the strike force and were well supported by a strong defence (one of the best!). Overall, a deserved victory for the Champions and I hope they repeat this next year as well.

Chattisgarh again!

The end of exams brought in another short trip to Chattisgarh. Once again to pay condolences to the dead. Last time, it was a visit to Kirandul. And this time, to Jagdalpur.
We started off suddenly without any kind of prior planning and because of that, we ended up in heavy discomfort. The only train to Jagdalpur starts from Vishakapatnam, which meant we had to go there first and then catch the train. Going to Vizag is a huge head-ache during summer as the trains are beyond full. This route also meant spending 2 days just to get there, and we had to get there as soon as possible. The only practical plan was to take a bus straight to Jagdalpur which would not only save a whole day, but would also be more easily available. The idea was to start from Hyderabad on the 19th, but due to some sentimental issues, we started on 18th. The bus journey was expected to be uncomfortable, but this one turned out to be a bit too uncomfortable. As we wound our way upto the Andhra Border, everything seemed fine. Then started the crowding. It was a type that you would see in the Tokyo metros at peak hours. People being packed in just to be able to close the door. The whole standing crowd were the local tribals who all gave off a weird, suffocating odour, and moreover kept falling onto people as they fell asleep during the journey. The weird stuff that they carry (live chickens, smelly fruits, other junk) nauseated us like hell and handling all that in a typical Indian Ghat road was a horrible experience. The bus was a private one which had to links to the Government so it was more-or-less a pretty safe travel through the Naxal-infested region of Bastar. The Forest Police had an awkward situation ahead of them. Their routine checks were hindered due to the excessive crowd. They couldn't even get onto a footstep to look into to bus. The crowd was standing upto the last step. Closing the door was a far-off issue. Over all this, there was one more problem. The luggage! Every person wanted his luggage to occupy a good space on the rack and the lateral movements of the bus on the 'National Highways' were so extreme that no bag would stay put. We had some irritating bag-falling moments which resulted in my mom getting a slight swell on the head as well! Sleep was out of the question and there was no comfort from the window breeze as well. The places were hot during the summer day and were giving off all the heat, straight into the bus and onto our faces.
We just managed to live through all that and survive till the next day. The journey lasted only about 16-17 hours which were complete hell. We decided, even if there's a train that would take 5 days to reach home, we would take it just because of its comfort.
Yet the stay at Jagdalpur was another demanding task. The hut-like houses are filled with all kinds of rodents that pester us to the core. The ceremony had many people coming which meant, some of us had to share to floor by laying mats. I was extremely hesitant about this, judging by the rats, cockroaches, mosquitoes, and lots of unknown insects. Most of these will be crawling on the floor at will during the night-time. We had to endure this for a few days to keep things smooth. The ceremony came-off without glitches and soon the short stay was over. Some Jagdalpur specials like the sweets and and tikki-chats had to go into our stomachs despite the rains, and tight schedules. And before we could realise we were back into the bus! The train journey again looked highly unpredictable because of the various issues. So we had to step back into the bus-journey that we were dreading. Surprisingly, the journey was much better than we thought. Though the long hours of sitting strained the legs, there were no other discomforts.
After the 16 hour wait, I was glad to see the familiar roads again. The short, unexpected trip came to an end and there was some relief.
Back home now, I must get back to the leftovers. The so-called mini-project might become a major problem if delayed. I must also cover-up the 5 days of 'no guitar'. Dying to lay my hands on it. It's back to the normal life of facing hurdles, celebrating victories, and playing guitar... Oops! My monitor seems to be having a problem! ...

Deccan Discharged

After I put aside cricket during my school-time, I never went back to it. I decided to chuck my interest in cricket. Suddenly soccer seemed a million times more interesting than the so-called 'religion-of-India'. Is it that we love whatever we are good at and hate whatever we are bad at? It almost seems to me like that.

Yet, the recently created new format of Cricket has taken me by storm. Even the exams couldn't stop me from watching the games! And why is that? It's simply because of the activity and speed of the game. Unlike those boring Test matches where the real test is on patience and the run-rate never goes above 3, and ODIs where you gotta watch 100 overs to find out the result, the T20 is rather exciting. On my personal note, I would say this format is successful but only on the entertainment point of view. When it goes down to the test of skill, I doubt about how successful this is. Still one can debate that if T20 was considered the only format ever, of playing the game, then any other formats like 50 over matches and 5 day matches would have been highly disappointing and boring. We still gotta wait and see how the players react to longer formats once they finish this IPL season. Would they try to hit the same way as they were in T20? If they would, either they would score 450-500 runs every match or never survive to play the 50 overs at all ... And this season has been quite an unpredictable one as far as now. Every team has seen extreme highs and lows, but the Deccan and Bangalore teams have firmly maintained their positions at the bottom of the table. It's rather disappointing to see that because a look at the squads would send chills down the opponents spines, and yet they have never fired as a whole. It's either a one-man show or a 180 degree topple ... Personally watching the entire process going hay-wire, I am always left to wonder what is possibly going wrong. But since my interest in cricket was never there, it's just a stop-watch-and-go thing for me. The vast amounts of money put in and the showy stuff all have hyped this tournament beyond limits, which I don't mind because it's living upto expectation and proving certain critics wrong as well (the age-factor, the batsmen-game, etc..)

Watching Deccan Chargers being discharged in every match is bringing out more pity than hate because every match I watch, I see Adam Gilchrist extremely active and lively on the field. There is a force running through him and yet that force isn't transferring to the other players and into the team. A single source of inspiration is not enough for a team game though that could be proven wrong by Patrick Viera when he used to play for Arsenal. As soon as he stepped into the ground, the whole team played like magic. Gilly, as he calls himself, clearly is doing whatever he possibly can, but I expect the other players to do what they can do best. Half the time Gilly is advising them to do something and they end up trying something they can't do.

The Discharging story is a rather long one which everyone would have noticed by now. And it's no secret that things aren't going good for the DC team. Though what they can pull out of the next few games is a question...

Alive or dead ???

I just dragged myself to blog 2 days after my exams got over. I feel alive now after those ready-to-forget exams. Can't even call them that. They were so one-sided. I would have lost anyway even if I ever prepared. The war is not just against the examiners who make life difficult after exams, but also the invigilators who make life during the exams. Stupid people turning up from JNTU and asking us to remove shoes and socks to prove there's no hidden stuff. One other day, we were asked to leave the shoes outside. The checking was much worse than a bomb-detection squad would do. They must invent some papyrus-detectors!! Which would work anyway because we not even allowed to take our wallets with us. The Hall-ticket would send the paper-detector crazy though. And our answer papers ofcourse ....

Anway, now that I am alive, I see too many deaths around me. Those thousands due to the China quake, the Bruma Cyclone, the tornadoes, the dust-storms, the bomb-blasts, all added to the death of my uncle on the 10th of May.

These holidays are a big task ahead now. I have to visit Jagdalpur within the next week for the ceremony and after coming back, must start the compulsory mini-project in the college, for the college, not for me .. but my real interest lies somewhere else. Hard work needs to be done with my guitar-work. Now that I have heard many accomplished guitarists, thanks to online video streaming (Michaelangelo, Paul Gilbert, Jimi Hendrix, Kirk Hammett, Mark Tremonti, some amateurs!!), I feel much lower than what I was an year ago. I used to think, "Now I am proper guitarist!! I can almost play any song I want" .. after listening more closely to lead guitar from Metallica, Alter Bridge etc, I was forced to change my mind. Right now, I might be about 0.001% of what Kirk Hammett or Mark Tremonti are. And my skill level though is up by more than 10 times, still feels as if I am half of what I was an year ago .... complicated maths!! If you concentrate too much you might end up becoming a guitarist .. be careful!!

Blog the Silence

It's been silent here for quite a while. And i've been a silent prey all the time as well, to some rather weird things around me.
First of all, my the semester exams are going on and they seem to be no different from the rest of the exams that I was doing these Engg. days. The same old lack of preparation, the same old unexpected paper, the same old tension. It's just the same old story. I am beginning to get bored of this now. 2 exams are done and both of them with the same script as before. Especially Structures, the one that I have been hating ever since I heard of it (from the roots of Solid Mechanics), was the worst yet out of the two. It's funny they asked us to remove our shoes before entering the hall. And, it's funny I had to cover my face a walk away for the first time in my life from a Lecturer. He was there standing, and asking everyone who came out, "How was the paper? Did you attempt all?" And here was me, looking desperately for options to avoid his glance. ...he already said this to me once before, "What happened? You are not showing interest in studies. You wrote only 1 answer this time. How much did you get in the last descriptive?" "2" "How much is your average?" I wanted to say - Around 6 or 7, but got away with it after someone distracted him. I left immediately.... This time again, I managed to get away. Some guy ran to him about a doubt (I never had a doubt in the exam. Even a wrong question would have looked ok to me) and I grabbed the chance before he could have "ObJerrrvud me" ... Wanna fail in the exam? Simple! Just attend his classes and read notes written by HIM. Or there could be an alternative! Try to make a new song the day before the exam!
Great patch I am going through. Maybe I just got so used to writing a single answer from the expected 5 all through the internals, that I am laughing around with stupid jokes even after a horrible External Exam Experience. I would say, I did get used to this. I've been doing this from the last 2 years. It's rather shameful that such things have been going on from the last 2 years and the results have been extraordinarily the opposite. I have begun to get the feeling maybe I can just get along like this till I actually fall off the cliff. Once I fall, I can then think how not to fall!!!

Moreover, the heat of the summer attracts you to the edge of the cliff. Imagine, the cool breeze you would feel, a feeling of flying and then the feeling of crashing ofcourse! Things can't go on this way. And it's bad I don't know how to put an end to this. Anyway, everyday, we can have a brand new start. Just touch the tip of the index finger to the tip of your thumb and think about the happy things in your life, and you can have a brand new start. Maybe I'll do that just now... hold on... ... ... ok Brand New Start (by Alter Bridge - great song!) ... oh nooo ! I was supposed to focus on exams ...

Anyway, off focus now I cannot get it back soon. Infact, of the reasons I have not been preparing well for these exams is the IPL T20 league. Believe it or not, I am watching every match I possibly can (I still don't know why!) with so much interest that if I put half of it in my studies, I would have been a happier man today. The IPL clearly reminds me of the EPL with home/away matches, crowd support, explosive performances, entertainment, etc. This format resembles soccer in a way and that has caught my attention. If people say T20 isn't successful, then they are wrong. It has managed to attract a cricket hater like me. But that won't mean I like cricket. It's just that the short format is easy to watch and enjoy, unlike the 1 day games or the 5 day games! Especially, listening to the music and the crowd from the International Stadium near my home, whenever Deccan Chargers lose feels quite good. The stadium lights nearly illuminating the whole of Habsiguda, and the music/commentary/crowd noise audible till inside my house ...

Deccan Chargers might be losing every game they play, if you ignore that Gilchrist Bomb that fell on Mumbai recently. But Manchester United from EPL seems to be going through a nice time. Top of the table (edgy) and Champions League Finals, is a good postion at the moment. Both the wars are with Chelsea and the stronger of the 2 is the winner ... I got no problems with Ferrari finishing on the podiums as well ...

Well, that should break the silence of my blog for now. Maybe the next post will come after another long bout of silence. Afterall, silence is more precious than Gold (to me atleast) ... I enjoy silence at all times except when my iPod is blaring ... like now!! Brand New Start by Alter Bridge.
