The Starry Sky 2

After a long time, i got a nice look at the sky again, and this time, the results were astonishing. I tried my luck at Jagdalpur, but the clouds were too dominant. But tonight, i found the sky about 95% clear and that was more than enough.

I found the stars as naturally as they are to be found and that is what excited me today. I found Venus and Jupiter within 2 seconds of looking at the sky. You can ignore the moon coz, it was a full moon and even a blind person will be able to see that!! hehehe.....

After Venus, my next step was saturn and i found that quite quickly after some hasty reference. Saturn was supposed to be embedded in Leo, and with the help of my Binoculars, i was able to find all the important stars of Leo. That was really an improvement from last time. I could finally make out the clear shape of the Leo constellation and it's Alpha star, Regulus. I then looked towards the moon, and immediately found a bright star between moon and jupiter. That actually was the alpha star of Scorpio. Then, i launched a fresh search on Scorpio, and susrprisingly, found the whole constellation within a minute. The perfect shape was staring at me from the sky. Was really great. After finding Leo and Scorpio, i thought it was enough. But then, i moved North and found the ever-famous Ursa Major, and it's Alpha and Beta stars showing me the way to Polaris (The Pole Star). Sad part was, I couldn't make out Ursa Minor whose tip ends at Polaris.

Overall, i feel, i finally moved a step ahead in identifying the stars. I have a strange feeling that it can really improve your vision. Infact, i heard people test their vision by checking how many stars they can see.

The worst times ...

Well, I got my driving license today and immediately i had to get the car out. My mom and sister wanted to shop at General Bazar and they wanted me to drive them there. I started off. We reached easily but the parking became a huge problem. The traffic even at 3:00pm was so high and the parking spaces were too limited. After a lotta trouble, i managed to get the parking right. The shopping was fine and i even bought some different type of shoes... (shoendles i call them). While getting back, the road was kinda inclined upward and i still didn't perfect my release of the clutch. And i had real trouble in that dead slow traffic. People honking from behind to show their irritation was more than frustrating. I had to keep my cool to get out of that spot. One guy from outside was constantly telling me what to do, and that was all the more irritating. Finally, i got out of that and the rest of the journey was smooth.

Now i know one thing. I am not gonna go out into such traffic unless i am more than 100% confident about my driving. The only way of getting confident is by driving more. So, i need to take proper time out and get experienced. But it's been a hell of an embarrasing day for me ...... signin off ......

Welcome Home

Well, i am back, after my short but tiring trip. Well, got lots of photos, and had to filter a lot to come out with a few. I am giving a day to day account of what when on during our journey...

Day 1 - 21/05/07: Well, this was a day of travel. We left for Vishakapatman in a morning train (East Coast). It was a morning to night journey and i got so bored that i read a complete novel called The Pelican Brief. We reached VSKP at 0:00 hrs exactly and went straight to my cousin's place. Our timing was such that we were to sleep for a few hours and board the 7:00 am train to Chattisgarh.

Day 2 - 22/05/07 Vishakapatnam was very hot and humid even at 1:00am when we could see almost all the stars in the sky and it was supposed to be the coolest time of the day. We took a quick nap and got ready for Kirandul Passenger which was to leave to Jagdalpur (my Granny's place) at 6:50am. The train started nearly 1/2 hr late and we were sweating in the heat. Managed to get First Class compartments and had a pretty much Comfy journey. Took some great photos. Including the bridge at Maligura (this one comes in Orrisa). It always is a tiring journey and we slept like logs soon after we reached Jadgalpur (arrival - 6:30pm). The train was supposed to go to Kirandul but was stopped at Jagdalpur coz of Maoist Attacks.

Day 3 - 23/05/07 This was a lazy day for me. I got up very late and was at home for the whole day. I just drove my Uncle's bike for sometime and tried teaching my mom how to drive an old Bajaj Sunny. Roads at Jagdalpur are very narrow and spoilt. Heavy trucks travel and it's more difficult to drive there than in Hyd.

The family at Jagdalpur

Day 4 - 24/05/07 We went to my cousin, Naga Danteshwar's house. He is married and has a daughter. Had lunch in his house. We incidentally went a Danteshwari Mandir as well, and a small fair called Meena Bazar.

Day 5 - 25/05/07 This was a field day for me. We went the famous Chitrakut Waterfalls at around 3:00pm and enjoyed a lot. A boat took us very very close to the falls and we could see rainbows all around in the water spray. The spray was all over us as well. We took great photos there. Only sad part was, it was summer time and the falls were weak. They looked powerful enough for me, but i was told that during the monsoon and winter time, the falls are so powerful that we can't ride the boat upstream. The spray comes out very very far and it comes in resemblance to the Niagara Falls in USA. Photos will show more details.
We also went to a Balaji Temple and came back dog tired.

Me at Chitrakut waterfalls

This one is a bit special. I managed to get to the top of the fall and within touching distance of the edge of the fall. Took this from there just as the water falls over the edge.

Day 6 - 26/05/07 This was our last day in Jagdalpur and we hardly did anything today. Just went in the evening to a park called Shahid Park but had to rush back within 10 min coz, my cousin Deepa accidentally fell into a small ditch full of murky water. Mind you, Jagdalpur is not a neat place.

Day 7 - 27/05/07 We boarded the Kirandul Passenger once again and headed back to Vishakapatnam. The train shockingly arrived 1/2hr before time. It is standard for this one to arrive a minimum 1 hour late. The single track and freight traffic and heavy terrain (derailments are too common and they are horrible) and bad weather all contribute to the late home-coming. Vishakapatnam was surprisingly cooler than before.

Pic taken at Koraput, Orrisa. There's a HAL hidden in this place away from prying eyes.

This one is just after crossing Koraput. Had to stretch my hand out of the window for this view.

This one is near a place called Machkunda Road. I liked the red soil and the green hills.

This is at Simliguda. Had the highest Broad Guage Railway Line. Slight motion blur in the pic coz, the train was moving fast before even leaving the station.

After reaching Vishakapatnam. The one on left is my cousin Amar and the one on right is his friend.

Day 8 - 28/05/07 We hardly had anytime today and early in the morning, we rushed to the beach. The roads are pretty much ok and wide. The traffic is very less compared to ours. It was kinda cool over there and we took photos. We went back quickly because the sun started rising and heating at alarming rates. We stayed at home the rest of the day and started our journey back home, boarding the Godavari Express at 5:25pm.

In the morning at the beach

Day 9 - 29/05/07 Stepped into Hyd and had a good look around. The roads thru Mettuguda have gone out of shape and at Tarnaka and Habsiguda are ready for assault by those pipeline guys. Will have to bear hell, dust and jams for aleast the coming weeks.

Break from the... Metro

Well, finally, after quite some time, i get the chance to step outside for sometime. I will be visiting a few relatives in Vishakapatnam and Chattisgarh. Giving a small insight, the journey to Chattisgarh thru Vizag is a wonderful one. THe distance is less than 300KM, but it takes almost 12-14 hours to do that. That's simply coz, the train winds thru the eastern ghats, making the sharpest bends and climbing to the highest broadguage track in india (at Shimliguda, AP), and passing thru tunnels, and giving great views of valleys and lots more. An exciting journey. Some of the important tourist places of AP like, Araku Valley, Borra Caves, etc come in this route. There's only one train daily and that is the sad part. People throng in without reservations and it gets really problematic during the peak summer time like now. The tribal entry starts in Orrisa, and you'll find them sitting anywhere they possibly could, and it continues on till Chattisgarh. The route is actually for freight trains that carry aluminium and iron ores from a place called Kirandul (the last station for this train in chattisgarh) to Vishakapatnam.

But the real thrill comes when you go over bridges (above deep valleys), and immediately enter a tunnel. Generally, its like a sequence while passing thru the hills. Tunnel and bridge, bridge and tunnel. Sometimes this sequence goes on continuously for a few times.

Above, you can see a pic of how this looks like. That's the only passenger train that goes thru this route. Few problems other than the tribal invasion are, some areas in chattisgarh like a Danteshwar District have been scarred by Maoist attacks and there have been a few horrifying incidents. The train is often cancelled indefinitely due to this. The freight trains are generally given more importance (coz they are for the real purpose of this route) and this passenger is stopped for hours (at times) to give way to the freights. The track is single and thus only one train can pass. The only possibility is a station.

And mind you, the stations come up very quickly. It takes about 10min to move from station to station and the trains stops for less than 1 min and at few, about 10secs. You can actually see a station from another if you are on a higher part of the hill. You can see other trains trying to reach this station on some other hill at a far off distance.

Ok, if i go on, i can never end... it's been more than 3 years that i went there, and i am really looking forward to it. Hopefully, this journey turns out to be more exciting coz, i got my cam and it's gonna help me capture some fantastic moments during the trip.

I may not be able to post anymore after this. Just in case i lay a hand on a system with internet in the rurals, i might post something. So, coming back after 29th, till then, BYE. Hope Hyderabad looks different when i come back...

The FA Cup

Yesterday, there was this great match between Manchester United and Chelsea, for the finals of the FA Cup. I had a pre-match prediction that the 90 min will end in a draw and they'll have to play extra time. And it turns out to be true !!!

The 90 min ended with none getting the better of the other. But that didn't mean the match wasn't interesting. Players from both sides opened up well, and created quality chances to convert. Both Goalkeepers were awesome and played their part well. Chelsea were almost sleeping at times, with only Drogba and Lampard making some movement, but suddenly Robben came in the second half and started showing his might. There was no one who could possibly stop him. He was like some thin mouse escaping every trap. But then, ManU's defense was upto the mark. Though Neville wasn't there, Hienze did well and also Vidic. For ManU, Scholes was the link between the defense and midfield and was giving inch perfect crosses to Rooney and Ronaldo but they ended up off-side atleast 6 times. Both teams constantly created dangerous chances but no one scored. Finally they had to settle with the 0-0 and go on for extra time.

For me, this was the painful part of the game. Both teams played with more vigour and more quality. After all, they are the top 2 teams, not just in England, they reached the semis of the Champions League as well. The chances kept coming. There was an instance where Giggs actually touched the ball towards the keeper and though the keeper saved it, the momentum of giggs forced him and the keeper into the goal. Infact, TV replays showed the ball clearly inside the goal. But it wasn't declared a goal. Even i felt, it was a right decision coz, the keeper was literally pushed in and he didn't go in by mistake or anything. That spoiled the chance of a 1-0 win to ManU... and then came the final one incident. There was some high quality passing between Drogba and Lampard (again!!) and this time, the defense was sleeping (especially, Rio Ferdinand - the costliest defender and considered among the best). Drogba gave a mini pass to Lampard and he flicked it back to Drogba at just the right distance and height and Drogba made no mistake on finishing that. That was just a few minutes before the 120 min whistle and it settled the game.

Chelsea wins and ManU loses. What was considered a good season for ManU ended with only one trophy and that was the EPL. Infact, at a point i was thinking they might repeat the treble by taking the FA, EPL and Champions League coz they had the players and the chance also....

Better luck next time ManU...

The starry sky...

Well, from the past few days, i have been spending most of the time after dinner on the terrace of the building, so that i can stay away from the heat of home. And soon, i got obsessed with seeing the stars. I am not talking about getting into astrology stuff, but i rather found this an interesting way to spend time. (waste time actually!! hehe)

The first and most obvious thing you'll see as soon as you look up is The Plough. I carefully observed it, but i couldn't make out the stars around it to complete the Big Dipper constellation. And after some research over the internet, i got a certain idea about the positions of the stars. But hold on !! it's never the same!! What we see on diagrams is almost always flipped or inverted and it gets so damn difficult to make out the positions in the real sky. It gets really frustrating to keep your head up all the time and search in vain... To add insult to injury, our great city ranks well in pollution levels. The effect of the day's pollution can be seen clearly at night with a orange-red glow covering the whole sky, and the lights from below being reflected to prove that. As a standard, we must be able to see about 60 stars without moving our head. And what i can see is about 6-8 stars, and that, after straining the eyes. Well, I don't wanna complain coz, i am really enjoying it...

I managed to find some interesting things over the internet and i get excited to see them out there in the blackness of the universe. Some of the things i would love to be able to see are, Leo, Orion, Big Dipper, Little Dipper, Canis Major and Minor, and a few more like Taurus. But before that, we need to find this so called Winter Triangle and the Winter Hexagon which has among the brightest stars like Sirius, Betelgeuse, Pollux and stuff.. I have been having a faint idea about the location of Sirius coz, it is the brighest star and also forms a vertex of the Winter Hexagon, and, it forms the constellation, Canis Major, but the problem is, i can't confirm it. There's a bright thing in the east the surely is Jupiter, and there are 2 brights above my head of which, one is Mars and the other might be Sirius. Just can't confirm...

The skies are cloudless, but are extremely polluted, and this problem is only mildly solved by my binoculars. I really hope we pollute less and return our sky to its natural blackness at night (and help me find my stars more easily!!). Infact, i am going to Vishakapatnam and Chattisgarh on 21st, so i think, i am surely gonna find the skies a lot better when viewed in Chattisgarh. The places are pollution free and also almost 600m above sea level. I hope i find what i want then...

Eggs-whams !!!

Finally, the big fight is over... and i feel like i just lost it. Ok, let's get down to some maths over here, though i hate it...

Now, the probability of me getting a tough set out of the four sets is 1/4, and this happened 5 times out of 6 days. So now, it multiplies to 1/1024 !!! Can any guy have such bad luck that he can get 5 tough sets out of the 6 exams ?? Well, i had... and look at the odds 1/1024 (or rather, 0.00097)... must call it ill-fate. And that tells the story of the great fight.

Anyway, the exams are over. Either this way or that. Had great plans for the exams coz, this semester was pretty interesting unlike 2-1, and i thought except maths, i can do all subjects good. Maths is not a core-subject and i didn't bother. But when the exam papers came out, the horrible twist unveils. The subject that i could write well was EEE, and that is not a big one, which means, i screwed up all the core-subjects.

Well, taking my mind off that horrendous experience, Manchester United has finally taken that trophy they were itching to lay their hands on. Well, they did a double feat after losing to West Ham. That might sound a bit awkward here. But then, even after losing to West Ham 1-0, they still took the Title home and also, they allowed West Ham to remain in the Premier League by avoiding the relegation zone. Well, so, were ManUtd a bit too humble?? Well, i don't know about that ....

And right now, can they make it past the FA Cup on a winning note ?? I don't even about that that. They gotta play Chelsea back at Wembley ...

Well, my pic(k)s of the day..

My new cam !!!

These are some pics from my new digi cam which i bought today...

These are my dad's paintings. You can see that he has given them the real life touch ....

These pics are fun pics i took to test some of the "abilities" of the cam. And i must say, i am really impressed by the nightshot photo. It was pitch black in that room and the photo comes out like this!!!
Images scaled from 1200 X 1600 to 800 X 600 so that i can save some time uploading these damn things. Each photo was about 1 MB...
